Privacy Policy & Your Privacy Choices

This notice explains what personal information BenchRecon collects, where it comes from, how we use and disclose it, the personal information we sell or share, and the privacy rights available to you — including, for California residents, the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. It also serves as our notice at collection.

Categories of Personal Information We Collect

We collect two distinct categories of personal information, which we keep functionally separate:

1. Information from buyers. When you purchase a report or join a waitlist, we collect the email address you provide. For attorney-tier orders we also collect the information you enter to complete the order and its use certifications: your firm name, your bar number and bar state, your attorney attestation, and your certification that you will not use the report for any purpose regulated by the FCRA or ICRAA. We record that certification together with a timestamp and the originating IP address as an auditable record of the certification. Payments are processed by our payment processor (Stripe); we do not collect or store full payment-card numbers on our own systems.

2. Officer public-record data (the product). Our reports compile information about law-enforcement officers — such as names, employing agency, and certification or discipline records — drawn from government public records. This data is about the officer who is the subject of a report, not about the buyer.

Sources of Personal Information

Buyer information comes directly from you when you place an order or join a waitlist. Officer public-record data is compiled from government and court public records (for example, state peace-officer standards and certification bodies such as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement / Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, and court records). We also automatically receive limited technical information incident to delivering the service, such as the IP address associated with a checkout certification.

How We Use Personal Information

We use personal information to:

  • produce, deliver, and support the reports you purchase;
  • process payments and send order, delivery, and refund communications;
  • maintain the FCRA/ICRAA non-use certification as an auditable use record;
  • operate, secure, and troubleshoot the service; and
  • comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.

How We Disclose Personal Information

We disclose buyer personal information to service providers who process it on our behalf for the business purposes above — our payment processor (Stripe), our email delivery provider (Brevo / Sendinblue), our database and file-storage provider (Supabase), and our hosting provider (Vercel). We do not authorize these providers to use buyer information for their own purposes. We may also disclose information where required by law or to protect our rights.

Officer public-record data is furnished to the buyers who purchase reports containing it. Because that data concerns officers with whom BenchRecon has no direct relationship, that furnishing may constitute a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information and may make BenchRecon a “data broker” under California law.

Personal Information We Sell or Share

We sell or share the category of officer public-record data described above, to the buyers who purchase reports. We do not sell the buyer information you provide at checkout or on a waitlist. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers we know to be under 16.

Your Privacy Choices & California Rights

Subject to verification and applicable law, California residents (and residents of other states with comparable laws) may exercise the following rights:

  • the right to know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected, used, disclosed, and sold or shared;
  • the right to delete personal information we have collected from you;
  • the right to correct inaccurate personal information;
  • the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information; and
  • the right not to receive discriminatory treatment for exercising these rights.

To opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, or to exercise any other right above, email us at hello@benchrecon.com with the subject line “Privacy Request” and tell us which right you are exercising. You may use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf; we may ask for information to verify the request and the agent's authority. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law.

Retention

We retain buyer order records and the FCRA/ICRAA non-use certification (including its timestamp and IP) for as long as necessary to provide and support the service, to comply with our legal, tax, and recordkeeping obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce our terms, after which we delete or de-identify it. Officer public-record data is compiled from public sources for the purpose of producing reports and is not maintained as an ongoing individualized consumer profile beyond what is needed to produce and support those reports.
